Plimmerton is a seaside suburb on Karehana Bay with a view of Mana Island. It has sandy swimming beaches.
Plimmerton is served by the Wellington suburban rail network making it a good place for a DayOut from Wellington. Visit a café, walk along the shore or go swimming. There are several Café/Restaurants in the village, including Cafe Vella and Polish Restaurant Topor Bistro.
On the shore of Karehana Bay is a Sailing and Fishing club, the Plimmerton Boating Club

Denis Glover wrote:

And one dead albatross was found At Karehana Bay.
In Plimmerton, in Plimmerton, The seabirds haunt the cave, And often in the summertime The penguins ride the wave.
In Plimmerton, in Plimmerton, The penguins live, they say, But one dead albatross they found At Karehana Bay
.
The existence of the cave is doubted. Possibly it was a figment of Glover's imagination.
Poet Sam Hunt once lived in a boatshed here.

Along the coast to the north is Hongoeka an active Ngati Toa marae, with a wharenui (meeting house) named Te Heke-mai-raro (opened 1997). Ngati Toa were once led by the famous fighting chief Te Rauparaha.
