39 Waitomo Village Road, Puketutu-Aratoro, Waitomo
A limestone geology and a glowworm unique to New Zealand combine to provide an experience that has been attracting tourists for over 100 years. Architectural buffs will also want to see the imaginative new visitor centre built after a fire in 2005. Designed by Architecture Workshop, this complex wooden canopy of laminated pine, sitting in native bush is worth a visit on its own. It justifies the over-worked epithet "iconic". As well as the glow-worm caves you can visit the Ruakuri and Aranui Caves.
