2017 State Highway 1, Kaikoura, Hurunui
In the first minutes of November 14, 2016, The tiny town of Rakautara began a new chapter in a violent fashion. The shook and the massive landslides that took out the road and railway along this coastline left the few residents of Rakautara isolated. Coastal uplift here also brought the seabed up several metres, changing their outlook forever. Surf Breaks on this coastline were forever changed.
The smattering of residents decided to stick it out here until the transport links were repaired. During this one and a half year process, the road workers moved in, making a base at Rakautara, right beside the town's previous sole claim to fame, the Nins Bin crayfish caravan. By 2018, the rail and road were functioning and Nins Bin was back in operation, selling cooked crays to travellers and probably road workers.
