Kohaihai Road, Karamea, Buller
The most dramatic leg of the Heaphy Track, along the coast and through magnificent forest. Apart from the Kohaihai Saddle, it’s flat; beach walking is possible in some places (use the track at high tide when the surging sea is dangerous). You also have to take care crossing small streams after heavy rain. Walk to the mouth of the Heaphy River mouth to see the awesome meeting of sea and river. You can see waves rolling up the river at high tide. Archeologists say Maori have been visiting here for more than 500 years.
