1 Bruce Street, Hunterville, Manawatu
A statue of a Huntaway, a sheep-herding dog takes pride of place on the State Highway in Hunterville. A New Zealand bred dog, the Huntaway uses its voice to drive the sheep. The small town of Hunterville (pop 500) makes passing travelers on State Highway One welcome with an ice-cream parlour, a coffee shop, a café/restaurant and a camping ground. The Edwardian Baroque former post office, built in 1904 when the Government Architect was John Campbell is a feature of the main street.
Look out for the highway patrol police on this stretch of State Highway One. They have a base nearby and a favourite pastime: "Hunterville Hunting" (hunting for speeding motorists).
