State Highway 63, Renwick-St Arnaud, Tasman
Surveyor Charles Hursthouse described this area, in 1859, as 'black forest region unfit for man or domestic beast', but did not ascribe a totally negative name to the place, as did others who chose some of New Zealand's Unusual Place Names. He simply called it 'Big Bush'. Nearby Teetotal Creek must have it's own reasons for sporting a weird name.
Still largely unmodified, the two areas have come together in the age of mountainbiking to form a 15,660 ha park, the trails beginning at Teetotal Flats Carpark, not far from St Arnaud township.
