25 Allardice Street, Dannevirke, Tararua
Under threat in Dannevirke is a slice of New Zealand and International architecture and philanthropy, the Carnegie Community Centre.
New Zealand was the lucky recipient of many Carnegie community libraries gifted by the American Industrialist in the early 20th Century. All individually drafted and crafted, they have become part of the the fabric of their home towns. When local government took over library services many of these special buildings converted to other community uses. Some were lost due to lack of maintenance.
Dannevirke's 1908 Carnegie Community Centre is on Allardice Street and has held it's ground despite damage from several earthquakes and the threat of bigger ones. In 1934 impressive parapets were removed due to an earthquake in nearby Pahiatua.
Youth Services are run from here and despite community agreement that these are the appropriate tenants, the building's condition has been cited as a cause for concern. Several other Heritage buildings have been lost from Dannevirke, but the Museum is housed in the old Courthouse, and the BNZ and Public Trust Building are standing on High Street.
