Waitomo Caves-Hangatiki, Waitomo
Allow three hours for the return trip. Predominantly easy but some steeper bits.
Brett Muir says: " In my opinion, the Upper Ruakuri Scenic walk (the section of the Ruakuri Walkway above the Aranui/Ruakuri carpark) is one of the most dramatic and enjoyable short walks in New Zealand (under one hour return). It is NOT suitable for people with mobility problems, but for fit and healthy walkers, and children, it is a well maintained track with surprises around every corner. Drop dead gorgeous native bush scenery, dramatic valleys, dense rainforest, dark caves to peer into and even walk through as part of the trail - even a swingbridge. Go back at night with a torch to see glowworms on the trail by the swingbridge. If you have kids, get them to take headlamps - they will love it. At the carpark/trailhead there is a delightful dry weather picnic area with gas barbeque, tables and well maintained toilets, although the picnic area will be soggy if the weather has been wet. Bring mossie repellant if you are picnicing. I have taken many, many kiwi and international visitors here and all have said it was a fantastic afternoon. If you want to make a whole day of it, visit the Aranui or Ruakuri caves while you are there (entry fees apply). Finish off with a great coffee at Blackwater Cafe in the Waitomo village, or at Bosco Cafe in Te Kuiti. A fabulously enjoyable day out if the weather is good.
