140 Hillcrest Road, Hillcrest, Netherby-Mangawara, Waikato
From swampy bush, to farmland and orchards, to a carpark, to an architectural triumph, the University of Waikato's dedicated Law and Management Building reached completion in 2016, more than half a century after the University struck out on it's own.
The magic in this six storey sustainable structure is that it appears to disappear, underground, thanks to it's grass roof. Perhaps a nod to Peter Jackson's Hobbitville in Matamata, perhaps not.
With a foot in each of the camps of modernism and brutalism, the concrete structure links with the adjacent buildings on several floors, with corridors, flow, and movement at the top of the design priorities. The oversized entrance provides a grand link with the rest of the campus, the seemingly sunken internal courtyard provides the opposite.
