A small town, (population 1000+), Opunake has been here since the 1880s. Sitting on Surf Highway 45 it is a popular spot to stay in summer with the camping ground sitting next to the sheltered sandy beach.
Outside the library in the main street of Opunake there is a statue of a runner in full stride. Peter Snell is the Taranaki town’s most famous son He broke many world records and won a number of Commonwealth and Olympic medals. But back in 1960, when he was selected to run the 800 metres in the Rome Olympics, he was unknown and unheralded.
Assorted Wall Murals called "Reflections of Opunake" 1900 - 2000 decorate the streets.
