Not to be missed, the Botanic Gardens cover a 30 hectare site of English lawn and woodland with extensive native and exotic plantings, bordered by the Avon River.
Only thirteen years after the arrival of European settlers in 1850, an English Oak tree was planted. It was the first of many splendid specimen trees which are such a feature of the gardens. There are many other special features: along the river bank there’s a wonderful daffodil display in spring - also the best time for the Rock Garden; a walk through the native New Zealand Garden gives a feeling of being in the bush; the Rose Garden is very popular as are the nearby Conservatories, of which there are several. The finest collection in New Zealand.
The herbaceous border and Herb Garden have an extensive range of plants; near Rolleston Avenue, bedding plants provide colourful displays in keeping with the elaborate, idiosyncratic Peacock Fountain. Decorated with dolphins, herons, lily leaves and other foliage, the fountain is a flamboyant example of Edwardian design. The children’s playground is extensive and the paddling pools are favourite places on hot days. The Botanic Gardens and the adjacent Hagley Park are a very fine legacy from the early settlers.
An award winning visitor centre completes the picture.
Comprehensive information on the Gardens is given on the website.
