525 Pencarrow Coast Road, Pencarrow Head, Eastbourne, Lower Hutt City
Walk or bike along this unsealed coastal road to the old Pencarrow lighthouses (2 hours return), Lake Kohangatera (3 hours return) or Baring Head (4 hours return). - Its more fun to bike - bikes can be hired from the start of the track.
To get to the historic Pencarrow light take a side track (sign-posted) to climb the hill.
This coastline has claimed hundreds of ships and survivors of the Wahine Ferry disaster washed up here. The wreck of the SS Paiaka (1906) is just past Lake Kohangatera. Being at the harbour mouth the wind strength and direction will determine your speed heading out and back whether on foot or bicycle.
The old 4WD track is flat, simple and regularly graded.
The attractions along the way are several bays where harbour flotsam may have washed up, a bit of sealife and some spectacular gorse and goats both running wild. 'The Pipes' is sheltered if a little dark in the morning time, still used by Boy Scouts despite the only facility being a rickety picnic table.
