Composed of two buildings of different design connected by fully-glazed, multi-level walkways the new six-storey ASB HQ is a ‘smart building’ managed by an integrated technology system, integrating control of lighting, access, security, communication, climate control and connectivity. The distinctive funnel on top of the building is designed to create a natural air flow in the building, by utilising a fresh air displacement system and drawing natural ventilation through the building’s windows and so minimising the need for mechanical air conditioning. The funnel, a fibreglass composite shell, is designed to mimic Auckland’s volcanic landscape. The ventilation system utilises thermal mass and extracts heat from the building and exhausts it throughout the building. Louvres in the funnel on top open depending on wind direction, effectively ‘dragging’ heat load from the building. This passive type of ventilation is controlled by an internal computer system. Australian architects Bligh Voller Nield Architecture (BVN), in association with Jasmax were responsible for the concept which was commissioned in 2012. The ASB North Wharf building won the 2014 New Zealand Architecture Medal.
