15 Wakamarina Road, Canvastown, Marlborough
Canvastown, where the Wakamarina River joins the Pelorus River. Named of course for it's tenting heritage in the Gold Rush days. There had been Ngati Kuia pa here named Te Hora. Thousands of tents once populated this area; for a short time a high yielding goldfield - the boom was over by 1865.
A very small town remains. Up the valley at the Pinedale motor camp you can hire a gold pan and try your luck. Services have drifted away from this town with the population, leaving a quiet farming district with an historic hotel, memorial hall, a scattering of houses and a school roll of 29.
15km up the road from Canvastown is the start of the Wakamarina Track, an old gold miners trail. The two day tramping trip crosses the Richmond Range into the Wairau Valley. This is the sort of track requiring boots, as in places it is steep and rough. There is a hut at Devil's Creek. Mountain bikers could do the journey categorised as Advanced/Grade 4 in one day.
