Invercargill’s Civic Theatre, located in the centre in the heart of the inner city, is one of the finest Edwardian Baroque public buildings in the country. Designed by local architect E.R. Wilson and opened in 1906, the building is being carefully looked after by the city council. The Civic Theatre, with a Category 1 classification by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust meaning that the building is of national significance, was fully restored in 2004/5 at the cost of $15 million with ornate gold and deep maroon Edwardian styled décor. The venue is fully licensed The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the New Zealand Ballet and other touring groups now perform here. The current programme can be found on this website.
