8 Texas Street, Featherston-Martinborough, South Wairarapa
South Wairarapa Community Halls
Small town, big facility. That is the complaint from opponents to the Wahinga Martinborough Community Centre construction.
Nevertheless, it has been built, and like similar developments elsewhere, it is probable the complaint will turn to praise as the small town learns to enjoy it's big facility.
Designed by architect Warren and Mahoney, the project incorporates strengthening of the Martinborough Town Hall, an un-reinforced concrete 1912 classical build on Texas Street. The adjoining community centre is a total deviation in architectural style, a monopitch modern hall, serving as the community hall, library and toy library,i-site visitor centre, and Plunket.
The new plan re-aligns the reserve landscape on the corner of Texas and Cork streets, where the Town Hall has for a century stood facing awkwardly South and East with all it's less attractive rear additions exposed to the playground.
Warren and Mahoney's intention for the project was the creation of a 'vernacular of friendliness', and the early signs are of success. It was completed in 2018.
