1 Avoca Street, South Bay, Kaikoura
Well placed for views over the bay this old colonial pub at the south end of the town has a fine bar come restaurant. It was built in 1885, this is the timeframe in which whaling and sealing of the earlier part of the century began to slow up, and Kaikoura may have had the first inkling of it's future as a tourist destination.
Slowing up is something The Pier has never done, still providing top notch fresh seafood beside open fires and and accommodating guests in the same colonial rooms upstairs. Inside the bar there are plenty of historical photographs to feast upon. Another restaurant also trades on the other side of Avoca Street. The main township is a healthy 2.5km walk away but the pub also puts on a shuttle bus for patrons.
