103 Jollies Pass Road, Hanmer Springs, Hurunui
Upper Dog Stream Track-Joliffe Saddle Track - about 2 hours
An easy walk with some hill work. Start 1km along Jollies Pass Road at the Department of Conservation Hanmer Field Centre. Enter the picnic ground, cross the footbridge and follow Dog Stream Track to the right. The path goes through exotic timbers, brush and wind fallen trees. The sounds of the stream and birds make up for the shambles of vegetation. This cutover forest is unsightly but can only be expected in a commercial forest.
The track continues on a forest road but you should keep to the right, near the stream to find the track proper that leads past a bridge. Climb up with the track to the left for a short time through kanuka and native beech. At the information board at the top, walk 50 metres up the slope for a panoramic view over the Hanmer Plain. Conical Hill and the lookout can be seen to the right. Go down Jollife Saddle Track through the cutover land with newly planted pines, past the sign indicating ‘Village’ for two or three minutes until you find the Timberlands Trail which takes you through beautiful larch and pine forest with a soft pine needle track surface. Here we heard the most glorious bell bird song.
Soon the cover opens to parkland, then a 4 wheel drive track which you should cross, pass the seat and follow the path into the trees on the left, then down the slope to the stream and the picnic ground again.
