The National Library has a concrete facade modelled on that of the Boston City Hall. The Ministry of Works (Peter Boyes) was the architect with completion in 1986.
It houses the Alexander Turnbull collection: one of the world's most important sources of research material on the South Pacific and also important works by poet John Milton.
Te Ahumairangi: An internal refurbishment by Warren & Mahoney completed in 2012, resulted in a welcoming and expansive public space on the ground floor with interactive digital facilities making the library a 21st Century knowledge centre. There is a popular public café (Home) on this floor. The Turnbull Gallery is on Level 1.
New Zealand's Poet Laureate is appointed by the National Library. The Laureates receive a monetary award and have a two year tenure.
